SourceForge suffered a serious failure last week, apparently taking out everything apart from a static page saying:
The sourceforge.net website is temporarily in static offline mode.
Only a very limited set of project pages are available until the main website returns to service.
The experience has demonstrated just how integrated things have become. The first I noticed of the outage was when I couldn’t update from the Functy SVN server. Soon after Launchpad started complaining about failed code imports (I use Launchpad to create nightly builds which are then added to a PPA). Soon after IFTTT started getting brumpy as well. It seems I live in a world where computers are far more interested in the software I’m involved with than any humans! That’s okay: I’m not choosy about where I get my interest from!
Existential realisations aside, I’m pleased SourceForge is moving back to normality and wish the team well in their efforts to sort everything out. As a real human, it highlighted just how much I rely on their services.
